Ebenezer Howard's vision of a Garden City was one that would combine the benefits of living in a town with those of living in the country. It would be a place in which people would both live and work in beautiful surroundings; in a city that would be not only a "city in a garden", but also a "city of gardens" and an example of good civic design and architectural harmony.

The Welwyn Garden City Society fully supports all the above ideals, although the town has now outgrown itself, and many residents commute to London and elsewhere. These and other social changes, such as the car becoming the main means of transport and the growth of supermarkets, chain stores and multi-national industrial conglomerates, means that Ebenezer Howard's original vision has already given way to the demands of modern living. It is therefore even more important that we help improve what we feel is wrong and safeguard what we have and value.
With the help of our members, we aim to represent local public opinion (non-politically), as well as preserve and conserve the environment and local heritage, ultimately striving to create a 'modern-day Garden City'.

Aims and Objectives.

Ebenezer Howard's vision of a Garden City was one that would combine the benefits of living in a town with those of living in the country. It would be a place in which people would both live and work in beautiful surroundings; in a city that would be not only be a "city in a garden", but also a "city of gardens" and an example of good civic design and architectural harmony.

The Welwyn Garden City Society subscribes fully to these ideals, despite the fact that the town has long since exceeded its planned size and many of its residents commute to London and elsewhere. Furthermore, the town's administration is now linked with that of Hatfield.

This, together with other social changes such as mass car ownership and the growth of out-of-town shopping means that the founder's original vision is constantly under pressure and attack. It is therefore more essential than ever to safeguard what we at present enjoy. This does not mean that we are solely concerned with preservation or conservation. We do have to watch closely what is being planned and to represent public opinion in matters of local concern, so that we can make Welwyn Garden City an even more beautiful and interesting place in which to live.

A newsletter is produced to keep you in the picture as to what the committee is trying to achieve on your behalf. The AGM takes place in June or July, and from time to time special meetings are called when a pressing item needs airing among members. Committee meetings are held every month, which any member may attend as an observer. The minutes of these meetings are displayed in the Campus Library for all to see.

If you find these ideas appealing, then you might care to become a member of the Society.
